Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, is a place where history and modern life come together in a unique way. Located on Scotland’s east coast, the city is famous for its dramatic landscapes, historic streets, and rich cultural scene. Edinburgh is divided into two main areas: the Old Town, with its medieval buildings and narrow alleys, and the New Town, known for its elegant Georgian architecture. Because of its historical importance, the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is also well known for its festivals. Every summer, Edinburgh hosts the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world, attracting performers and visitors from over 70 countries. With a population of around 550,000 people, Edinburgh feels lively but still easy to explore by foot.

Edinburgh Castle – The City’s Most Famous Landmark
One of the most iconic sights in Scotland is Edinburgh Castle, which stands high on an extinct volcanic rock called Castle Rock. The castle dominates the city skyline and has played a key role in Scottish history for over 1,000 years. It was once a royal residence and a military fortress and has been involved in many historic battles.
Inside the castle, visitors can see the Scottish Crown Jewels, also known as the Honours of Scotland, which are among the oldest crown jewels in Europe. Another famous feature is the Stone of Destiny, which was used in the coronation of Scottish kings and can be seen in Perth Museum. A fun fact is that the One O’Clock Gun is fired every day except Sundays and holidays, a tradition that began in 1861 to help ships in the nearby harbor set their clocks.

A City Full of Stories
Edinburgh is often called one of the most haunted cities in Europe, with many ghost stories linked to its old streets and underground vaults. At the same time, it is a city of learning and ideas: the University of Edinburgh, founded in 1582, is one of the oldest and most respected universities in the English-speaking world. With its mix of history, culture, and stunning views, Edinburgh is a city that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits it.
