My adventure started on Sunday the 14th of August. Sara, the boss of the Tjarnarbio theatre, picked me up at the bus station and brought me to my new home. It was such a nice gesture and it immediately made me feel like I belonged.
The next day was my first day at the theatre and I was greeted by Gigja, my new coworker and soon to be friend. Everything was pretty exciting and new, and together with Gigja I learnt about all my tasks in the theatre. The first few weeks of work mainly contained learning a lot about the building and its organizational structure, some construction work (since the whole theatre was renovated over the summer and some tasks were still left to do like painting walls and so on) and getting everything ready for the new theatre season that started at the end of August. When the theatre officially reopened and the new cafe also opened its doors, my time at work also got more routine. My main tasks then were helping out in the cafe and be in charge of it on some days, building up the sets of the groups in the mornings, helping and assisting the theatre groups, working in the evening shifts when the theatre pieces were shown, taking care of the ticket office and help organizing and preparing events. Each day at the theatre was different, therefore it never got boring.
I really enjoyed working at the Tjarnarbio theatre, not only because I learnt a lot about the theatre scene and Icelandic culture, but also because I worked with a kind and welcoming team. We always had a great time together and I consider them my Icelandic family.
Living in Iceland has always been a dream for me, so I’m endlessly grateful that I had the opportunity to live in Reykjavik for four months and work at an independent theatre with a heart warming team.
