Simone Bscheiden and Julia Weissinger
We, Julia and Simone, had the chance to do an internship from the 28th of June to the 31st of July at the Jamtli Museum in Östersund, Sweden.
The Jamtli museum has a big open-air area which shows what farm life looked like, in different times in Sweden. The whole area is divided in different centuries, for example there were places for the years 1785, 1895, 1942 and many more. In these places you could see houses with the typical furniture and facilities from that year and in addition there were actors who played as if they lived in that certain year. That also included talking about historical events from that time as if it was big news or talking to the audience about topics that were relevant at that time.
From our experience we could tell that the visitors really enjoyed that type of entertainment and liked to get involved with the actors.
Another great thing about the museum is that there are various opportunities to experience the role play for all kind of ages and situations. There are special programs for children and even programs for old people with Alzheimer.
But Jamtli doesn’t only have the open-air area. Jamtli also has a museum where you can learn more about the Vikings or the medieval time and many more ages. It also has an art museum where many exhibitions about different topics are shown. The latest exhibit was about mystical creatures in the legends of Sweden.
In our time at Jamtli we were able to have an extensive insight of all the sections of the museum. We talked and had coffee with the people who are responsible for the marketing, event management, programs for adults and children, the archive and many more parts.
One of our tasks was to do a little exhibition with two other interns, Olivia and Drago, about how we perceived the life at Jamtli. So, we had to take photos of the open-air museum, write short texts to the photos and make the exhibition “My picture of Jamtli” which was published in a little pavilion at the open-air area.
Another task was the role play. We were able to borrow clothes from the year 1942 and walk around with the other interns, Lowissa and other volunteers. Acting was a lot of fun!
We really had a great time at the Jamtli museum and also learnt a lot from that experience. Especially great was our supervisor Lowissa. She took us on a lot of trips with her family and showed us many beautiful places of Östersund.
